Kenny Mcdonald just broke the Lightweight men’s 40-49 500m WORLD RECORD in Shannon Rowing Club Limerick, verified by Joe Cantillon of ROWfit. His time was 1:23.0 and he was in weight. What a row it was – the last 30m looked like the hardest but he got it over the line and took 0.5 seconds of the previous WR set in 2012 by Gary Homann USA.
Kenny also set a new National Record Back in 2014 as this excerpt from an article in the Nenagh Guardian explains….
World Indoor Rowing champion and Moneygall resident Ken McDonald, has set a new National Record over 2km of 6 minutes and 20.7 seconds. McDonald, who won a gold medal in the recent world championships, in Boston in February, broke the old record by one second. The event held in St. Michael’s Rowing Club, Limerick, saw Ken compete against Jonathan Doyle, who was second behind Ken at the World Championships. Ken opened an early lead on Jonathan and held it through the race to win by almost 3 and a half seconds. Jonathan also set a personal best on the day. A former International rower for Ireland Ken, is now working as a fitness instructor in the Garda College in Templemore, as well running his own fitness classes.
All at Shannon Rowing Club are really proud of Kenny who has rowed with us over the years and represented us so well, both individually and as part of various crews, on the international rowing stage. He was club captain for two years in 2012 and 2013 and gives talks, classes and demonstrations to our young rowers on an ongoing basis.
